It's like riding a bike backward when we use this saying as a little shorthand to mean that once you learn how to do something, you never forget it. But this type of learning is knowledge, it isn’t understanding, and there is a big difference between the two.
Just because you know something intellectually, you still have thoughts, feelings, and emotions that you cannot change overnight. If your intellectual brain knows that something is bad for you, it doesn’t mean that your intuitive brain is going to do anything about it. You have thoughts, feelings, biases, and emotions that get in the way of your intellectual brain.
You can watch a hundred workout videos, join a gym, get a Ph.D. in nutrition, and still be overweight and out of shape. You can have all of the knowledge in the world about what it takes to get fit, but that knowledge won’t do you any good in your quest unless you put in the work.
If you listen to hours and hours of podcasts and read dozens of articles on overcoming procrastination or good study behaviors, your brain will not truly understand its benefits unless you are willing to commit to working on it for a long time.
If you are trying to pass your FE or PE exams, you must practice and then practice more. You need to literally rewire your brain. By now, in your career, you KNOW how to study, you KNOW what to study, and you KNOW what it takes to pass your exams. How do you get from that knowledge to understanding?
Repetition.
You need to practice, practice, practice. You need to stop thinking about what you need to do to succeed and start practicing the things that will make you successful.
Destin Sandlin produces a video series called Smarter Every Day; I'm sure you've heard of it. Check out his video below on this very concept, where he shows that knowledge is not understanding. I think you'll like it
It is time to make up your mind to put forth the effort. Everything worthwhile in this life takes effort. It takes a lot of courage to take that first step. It takes courage and strength to take ownership of your life and your future.
Don’t spend your valuable time looking for hacks and quick fixes. Instead, decide today that you are going to take that first scary step and put in the work necessary to succeed.
You can do it, and we are here to help!
..and speaking of help, we have just announced our KENYA2022 sale going on NOW until October 1st.
I've been wondering how to help those I served in Kenya (if you haven't checked that out, you can here), and I thought, why not hold a course sale? You save 10%, and I give 10% to those in Kenya, specifically the Kanjaoka Primary School, which needs clean water, better food, and more education.
So, if you are up for helping kids out in Africa and you want to ace your exams – I think it's a win-win. You can check that out at civilengineeringacademy.com
