How Many Professional Engineers Are Out There?

Civil Engineering Academy Blog

You have probably wondered how many PE's are out there? Did you know that the NCEES publishes results on this stuff? According the the NCEES organization we have more than 800,000 PE's in the United States and about 60,000 licensed surveyors. That's awesome! I would also venture to guess that the majority of those are civil engineering P.E.'s because it is almost demanded that civil's get it.

This total includes all the U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It also counts those that hold licenses in more than one state, which means that they might have been counted more than once.

It is crazy to think that we are heading toward having 1 million licensed PE engineers within the United States. What does that mean for the jobs? I can remember when I first started applying for jobs after I finished school I was able to obtain 3 job offers before I even graduated. I thought things were great! Fast forward to today and some people have struggled to find work. I had coworkers that took intern jobs just because it was something that they could find. I think today things are getting better and the demand for civil engineering is only going up throughout the U.S. and the world. If you question that then check out this article written about how things have been improving for the engineering field. Good stuff!

Speaking of jobs, if you need one then head over here and start searching. It looks like there are lots of things out there and with a P.E. license you are guaranteed to be offered more for your skills.

If you want to read and download the report breakdown then check it out on the NCEES website. Get that PE!

Hello, I’m looking for the number of licensed professional engineers and land surveyors in California. The above link no longer works. Do you know of of updated source of this information.

Check out what the Bureau of Labor and Statistics has on it. They are showing about 46,000 civil engineers. https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes172051.htm

The following website says that as of March 31, 2022 there were over 4,994 PEs in the US:
    https://www.zippia.com/professional-engineer-jobs/demographics/

This website, the civil engineering academy blog, says that there are more than 800,000 PEs in the US, although those that hold licenses in more than one state may have been counted more than once, so this is really the number of licenses in the US.

Request that the number of persons and the number of licenses be clarified and corrected.

Well, the NCEES produces pass rates for those that pass the PE exam. In December of 2021, there were 7,573 test-takers that took their civil engineering PE exams (structural, geotech, transpo, water resources, construction). I find it hard to believe that their article lists only 4,994 PEs in the entire US when you are getting well over 7,000 exam test takers and an average 65-70 percent pass rate for each exam. If you consider when the PE was first introduced up until today I don’t see it hard to hit the numbers we quoted. I would request that the number of licensed PEs be clarified on their website.

✔️ Compliment

It’s simple, but it sticks. Whether you're leading a team, working with clients, or just being a better human—these three habits go a long way.

Master this, and you'll naturally become a better coworker, leader, friend, and entrepreneur.

Relationships drive results. Start with the 3 C’s.

Today, I got to watch my daughter shine in her school play (OK it was just a practice), James and the Giant Peach. She crushed it (yes, I'm a proud dad), and while I was there, something clicked.

Every performance like this takes weeks of rehearsal, repetition, and nerves. It's all about showing up, putting in the work, and eventually stepping out under the lights, even if you're not 100% sure how it'll go.

Kind of like preparing for the FE or PE exam, right?

You don’t pass these exams by luck. You pass them by practicing the problems, knowing your lines (aka the equations), and having the guts to show up and give it your best—even when the nerves hit.

So whether you're studying late nights or heading into your first attempt (or third!), remember this: progress takes practice—and you’re not alone in the performance.

Break a leg.
